At INOTEX 2025, Russian Company GeoPixel Unveils Indigenous Navigation System Independent of GPS
On the sidelines of INOTEX 2025, Russian technology company GeoPixel unveiled its proprietary navigation system—an alternative to GPS that operates independently of satellite infrastructure—signaling a potential new chapter in Iran–Russia technological cooperation.
According to the INOTEX 2025 Media Office, GeoPixel’s representative in Iran announced the company’s plans to deploy its satellite-independent navigation system in the country. The system operates using a combination of ground-based sensors, radio waves, and emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence, enabling fully localized navigation services without reliance on satellites.
In an interview on the sidelines of the exhibition, Abed Amiri, GeoPixel’s representative in Iran, said the company began operations in Russia in 2019 and is now seeking to expand its footprint by transferring technical knowledge and technology to Iran.
“Navigation systems such as GPS are controlled by specific countries, and in many regions—including Iran and Russia—their use comes with technical and operational limitations,” Amiri said. “GeoPixel has developed a system that delivers accurate navigation and mapping services without the need for satellites.”
Unlike satellite-based positioning systems such as GPS, GeoPixel’s solution relies on a network of ground stations installed in elevated and strategically distributed locations. These stations are interconnected and transmit precise location data via radio signals and IoT-based communication.
According to Amiri, eliminating the need for satellite deployment significantly reduces operational costs while improving accuracy. “Our system delivers precision down to one meter, and in some cases as fine as 10 centimeters,” he said.
“We have essentially brought the satellite from the sky down to the ground,” Amiri explained. “Because the system does not rely on sending signals into space and receiving them back, it avoids signal loss and latency, resulting in much higher accuracy than GPS.”
Amiri noted that the technology has a wide range of applications, including airspace management, smart agriculture, smart cities, industrial tracking, hospital navigation systems, and workforce management in factories.
In certain Russian industrial facilities where mobile phones are prohibited, the system is already being used for secure internal communication, employee positioning, and operational requests, he added.
GeoPixel has also integrated artificial intelligence into some of its products to enhance accuracy, enable location learning, and optimize network performance. “This combination has allowed our system to outperform many international competitors, including GPS-based solutions, in both precision and cost efficiency,” Amiri said.
Amiri emphasized that GeoPixel’s presence at INOTEX 2025 is aimed at identifying Iranian partners and localizing the technology within Iran.
“Iran has strong technological capacity, and given the expanding relations between Iran and Russia, we are interested in localizing this technology here,” he said. “Our goal is to create an ecosystem that supports the growth of Iranian startups working in intelligent positioning and navigation technologies.”
Commenting on the exhibition, Amiri described INOTEX 2025 as dynamic and productive. “The strong presence of technology companies here reflects the vitality of Iran’s innovation ecosystem,” he said, expressing hope for sustained collaboration with Iranian technology stakeholders following the event.
